Turn off the power on the garbage disposal.

Use a flashlight to look inside the disposal. Use tongs to remove any large foreign objects.

Find the hex wrench that came with the disposal. If you do not have a hex wrench, you will need to buy one that fits the hole in the bottom of the garbage disposal. Ask a home repair store for help if you are unsure about the size of the clogged drain.

How To Use a Snake Machine on a clogged drain.
When you pull the plug and water stands in the bathtub or sink, you have a clogged drain.

You could call a plumber to clear it, but you can remove the clog yourself and save money. You can do this with a manual or electric sewer snake machine. A manual snake will take care of a small clog, but you will need an electric one for bigger clogs.

Find the clean-out plug on the main drain line. This is usually located in the basement or crawlspace.

Place a bucket beneath the drain. Lay some towels around the area where you will work. This will soak up water that spills and protect fittings from any debris you pull out of your drains.
Loosen the plug with a wrench. Allow the waste and water to drain into the bucket. When nothing more comes out, remove the plug.

Place the end of the sewer snake into the drain hole. Feed the auger head into the drain, rotating it slightly as you push it through the drain.

Continue until you feel resistance at the end. Begin to push the snake forward and then pull it back. Keep pushing it forward and backward until the blockage clears.

Rotate the head so it catches hold of whatever blocks the drainpipe. If the auger will not catch hold of the blockage, use the head of the snake to eat away at whatever blockss the drain. Keep doing this until it breaks down and you dislodge it.

Pull the snake out of the drain. Use towels to dry off the snake as it comes out. Clean the mess left by the clogged drain and Dump the debris you pull from the drain into your bucket.

Pour several buckets of hot water down the drain. Alternatively, if you can, hook up a hose to the hot water tap and run the hot water into the drainpipe for 5 minutes. This will wash away the rest of the debris that your snake auger left.

Check to see how the water drains. If it is slow, you may need to snake the drain again. If the water drains at the normal speed, replace the clean-out plug. It must be tight, the clogged drain will otherwise waste and/or sewer gas could leak through.
